The calm before the storm.

Many people are referring to this year (the year of the national election) as a watershed moment in South Africa's democratic history. After years of disappointment and crushed hopes, South Africans have finally begun to turn against the ruling party (the African National Congress or ANC). Slowly, we are coming to grips with the idea that our liberators are incapable of saving us; and that the saints we've laid our hopes upon are in fact sinners themselves. This comes in the wake of mass unemployment, rampant crime and corruption,


The time has come to reflect on our future as we never have before.


and continuously inadequate service delivery to the countries most vulnerable. The government has factionalized, the people are reaching dangerous levels of frustration and infrastructure is crumbling- the wheels are coming off the post-democratic bus. And now, people are anxious for change. However, anxiety manifests itself in numerous ways. Some have turned to opposition parties such as the Democratic Alliance (DA) or Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for hope whilst others fear the unknown... some have been rendered completely despondent. Amidst all the confusion, hope, despair and angst lies a strong instinct that something fundamental will shift this year. Whether for the better or worse only time can tell. No matter the outcome, Jozi Deep will be there to document this moment of history from the perspective of the lives it promises to change. Through capturing the emotions, stories and expression of ordinary South Africans throughout this landmark year, history will be reported through a glimpse into the restless soul of South Africa.
